USA South Football History
The USA South
sponsored its first year of football in the fall of 2001. In
the fall of 2000, no team title was awarded but the league did keep
statistics, named Players of the Week and chose an All-Conference
team. Christopher Newport and Ferrum shared the Conference
championship in both 2001 and 2002, with CNU earning the league's automatic
bid to the NCAA playoffs both years with wins over the Panthers in the
season finale. CNU became the first NCAA team to advance to post-season
play in its first year of existence. The Captains split the
Conference championship again in 2003 and 2004, both with Shenandoah. CNU again earned the NCAA
playoff bid in '03, but the Hornets advanced for the first time in
'04. CNU received one of NCAA at-large bids in 2004 and won
their first round game. Again, in 2005, the Conference had
co-champions with Ferrum and Methodist sharing the title with Ferrum
receiving the automatic bid. The trend of
co-champions continued in 2006 as Christopher Newport and Averett split the title with
CNU receiving the NCAA playoff bid. This past season, N.C. Wesleyan
became the first-ever outright champions of the league with a 7-0
record in conference play.
