Top-Seeded Salisbury Tops Eighth-Seeded Randolph-Macon

(DANVILLE, VA) - Andrew Miller went 3-for-5 as Salisbury University (39-2) defeated Randolph Macon (26-15), 7-4, in the first game of the NCAA South Regional at American Legion Field at Dan Daniel Park on Wednesday.

In a battle of undefeated pitchers, Eric Willey improved to 11-0 for Sea Gulls, while freshman Byron Mendendhall dropped to 7-1 for the Yellow Jackets.

Trailing, 7-4, in the ninth, RMC had the game tying run at the plate. Adam Carpenter (3-6) doubled off the centerfield wall. On the play, Jay Lichter (4-4) was the thrown out at the plate, and then Kevin Davis was tagged out at third for the double play. Greg Meleski then grounded out to end the game and earn reliever Ryan Bennick his second save of the year.

The Yellow Jackets stranded 17 runners in the game and out-hit SU, 15-13.

RMC plays at 11 a.m. while the Sea Gulls, ranked fourth in the nation, play at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
