May 14, 2008 Christopher Newport Rallies to Down Johns Hopkins (DANVILLE, VA) - Christopher Newport rallied from behind to upset Johns Hopkins, 8-5, in an NCAA South Regional game at American Legion Field at Dan Daniel Park on Wednesday. CNU, seeded fifth in the tournament
improved to 29-12. Second seed JHU dropped to 34-6. With the game tied, 5-5, in the top of the 10th
inning, Chris Despins (2-for-4, double, 2 runs, 2 RBI) singled to leadoff
the frame. Ryan McDougal sacrificed the runner to second. Eric Cole
(1-for-5) singled up the middle to score Despins for the eventual winning
run. The Captains added two additional runs for the final margin. JHU got to Captain starter Kenny Moreland early with
three runs in the first inning and two in the second frame. He then calmed
down and did not allow another run. Moreland threw 127 pitches in the
contest and retired 22 of the last 25 batters he faced. The CNU ace, who
improved to 13-0, retired 12 consecutive hitters during one stretch. Kevin Moreland, Kenny’s younger brother, earned the
save by hurling a scoreless 10th inning. Travis Medina went 2-for-4 with
triple, a run scored and a run batted in for the Captains. Pat Stafee (1-2) took the defeat on the mound for the
Blue Jays. Brian Youchak (2-for-5, double, run, RBI) and Todd Emr
(2-for-5, double, run, 2 RBI) led the JHU hitters. CNU plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday vs. the winner of Wednesday’s Lynchburg-Piedmont 7 p.m. contest. JHU plays Randolph-Macon in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Thursday. |
