May 16, 2008 Lynchburg Pulls Away From Christopher Newport in Late-Night Affair (DANVILLE, VA) - Seven hours after the game was originally scheduled to start, and after two rain delays, the Hornets of Lynchburg College defeated the Christopher Newport Captains, 12-1, in the NCAA South Regional Baseball Tournament on Thursday. Both teams crossed a single run in the second inning, with Christopher Newport (29-13) scoring on a home run from Chris Despins and Lynchburg (32-11) scoring after Jeff Taylor drew a walk and later scored on an error. The Hornets scored one run in the fifth inning to take the lead and broke open the contest with five runs on five hits in the sixth. LC further expanded the lead with four more runs in the seventh inning and crossed a final run in the bottom of the eighth frame, putting the final score at 12-1. Ronnie LaBrie led the Hornet offense with three hits, four RBI and three runs scored. Despins had two hits for the Captains, including his homer. Jonathan Nichols picked up the win with eight innings pitched allowing only four hits, while Josh Brinkman took the loss allowing six runs after the game resumed from the first rain delay. Christopher Newport will now take on Salisbury on Friday, May 16, at 12:00 p.m. Lynchburg advances to game nine at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, to play the winner of the CNU/Salisbury contest. |
