Football Offensive Player of the Week
Derek
Hunt, Maryville - The freshman quarterback from
Maryville, Tennessee was directly involved in each touchdown scored by
the Scots in a 41-35 loss to Huntingdon. Hunt was 19-of-32 for 326 yards
passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Hunt also carried
the ball ten times for a total of 38 yards which included a 21-yard
touchdown. Also Nominated: Marcus Mayo, Ferrum; Jeremy Dixon, Averett;
Torrey Lowe, Greensboro; Kevin Roberts, Shenandoah.
Football Defensive Player of the Week
Wesley Pope,
Shenandoah - The Falls Church, Virginia senior defensive
back had 11 tackles as the Hornets fell to
Catholic, 23-20, in overtime. Pope accounted for eight solo tackles,
three assisted
take downs, 5.5 tackles for a loss of 25 yards and a new school record
two forced fumbles. Also Nominated: Brian Richardson, Greensboro; Mario
Huffman, Averett; Quentin Pope, N.C. Wesleyan; Maureik Goode, Ferrum;
Kyle Chewning, Maryville.
Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Mario
Miralles, Methodist - The Hialeah, Florida sophomore
place kicker broke the school record for field goals in a game in the
Monarchs', 32-21, victory over Campbell. Miralles was a perfect 4-for-4,
giving Methodist an early 12-0 lead. Miralles twice booted field goals
of 43 yards. He also added two extra points in the victory. Also
Nominated: T.J. Grzesikowski, Ferrum; Anthony Squillini, Averett.
Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Ben Norman, Greensboro - The senior midfielder
from Blowing Rock, North Carolina totaled two goals and three assists for
seven points during a 2-0 week for The Pride at the Doug Hamilton
Memorial Tournament. In a 3-0 win over Guilford, Norman scored the first
two goals of the game while adding an assist on the final tally of the
contest. In a 3-1 win over Marymount, Norman assisted on Greensboro's
first goal and the eventual game-winning second score of the match. For
his efforts, Norman was named to the All-Tournament Team. Also Nominated:
Robert Ivanovich, N.C. Wesleyan; Tyler Claire, Christopher Newport.
Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Benjamin Schmedes, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior defender from
Hanover, Germany helped lead the Bishops to a 2-0 record at the Doug
Hamilton Memorial Tournament. Schmedes helped a defense that did not
allow a goal in two contests. The Bishops earned a 2-0 win over
Marymount before defeating Heidelberg, 5-0. Despite being a defender,
Schmedes was named the Tournament's MVP. Also Nominated: Kurt Gardiner,
Greensboro; Matt Tengs, Christopher Newport.
Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Maggie
Hart, Meredith - The Mooresville, North Carolina junior
forward scored two goals in a 4-0 victory over Bridgewater last week at
the Esprit Tournament. Hart scored the second and third tallies of the
contest to help put the match away. The Avenging Angels' only other
contest of the week was an 8-2 win over Marymount. Hart was held
scoreless in the win but did manage two shots on goal. For her efforts,
Hart was named to the All-Tournament team. Also nominated: Reva McCloud,
N.C. Wesleyan; Kerrie Fallen, Averett.
Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Bryanne
Godfrey, N.C. Wesleyan - The Howell, New Jersey senior goalkeeper recorded
a 1-1 record last weekend for the Bishops at the Esprit Tournament. In
two starts
and 200 minutes played, Godfrey allowed three goals and tallied 16
saves. Godfrey earn her first shutout of the season by stopping seven
shots in a 1-0 victory over Marymount. In a double-overtime loss to
Bridgewater, Godfrey allowed three goals while making nine saves. For
her efforts, Godfrey earned All-Tournament Team honors. Also Nominated:
Amanda Johnson, Greensboro; Kristin Braxton, Meredith.
Volleyball Player of the Week
Kacie Hyatt,
Greensboro -
The junior outside hitter from Randleman, North Carolina led The
Pride to a 2-2 record last week by totaling 67 kills, 22 digs, six
blocks, three service aces and two assists. In a 3-0 win over Guilford,
Hyatt tallied a match-high 14 kills and four blocks while adding two
digs and one service ace. In a 3-1 loss to Piedmont, Hyatt recorded a
match-high 18 kills with eight digs and one assist. In a 3-1 loss to
Oglethorpe, Hyatt contributed a team-high 16 kills with seven digs.
Finally, in a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg, Hyatt tallied a match-high 19
kills with five digs, two blocks, two service aces and one assist. Also
Nominated: Brittany Insley, N.C. Wesleyan; Taylor Cates, Methodist; Sara
Elliott, Meredith; Colena Roberts, Mary Baldwin.
Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Jordan Grady,
Methodist -
The junior defensive specialist from Erwin, North Carolina
recorded 99 digs, four assists and one kill last week as the Monarchs went
2-3. In a 3-0 win over Salem, Grady recorded a match-high 11 digs with
one assist. In a 3-2 loss to Emory & Henry, Grady totaled a
team-high 30 digs with two assists. In a 3-2 loss to Randolph, Grady
contributed 18 digs with one assist while in a 3-0 loss to Roanoke, she
totaled 14 digs. Finally, in a 3-1 win over
Sweet Briar, Grady tallied a team-high 26 digs with one kill. Also nominated: Kelly

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Kathryn
Stephens, Mary Baldwin - The junior helped the
Squirrels finish third at the Shenandoah Invitational. Stephens placed
second out of 37
runners with a time of 27:28 on the 6K course. Also Nominated: Lauren
McDonald, Meredith.

Idlette, Maryville - The freshman wide receiver
from Chattanooga, Tennessee caught two touchdown passes in a 41-35 loss
to Huntingdon. Idlette had a game-high 153 yards on eight receptions for
a 19.1-yard average. Idlette recorded scores of 62 and three yards.
Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Terrance Bullard, Averett - The freshman defensive
lineman
from Riviera Beach, Florida recorded six total tackles in a 34-13 loss
to Bridgewater. Bullard tallied two solo tackles
and four assisted take downs while amassing three sacks for a loss of 16
yards. Also Nominated: Tanner Caylor, Maryville.
Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Winston
Mattheisen, Christopher Newport - The freshman forward
from Williamsburg, Virginia accounted for nearly half of the Captains
seven goals in a 2-0 weekend at the Marietta (OH) Tournament. In a 3-1
win over Westminster, Mattheisen scored one goal on two shots. In the
tournament's championship game, a 4-1 win over Walsh, Mattheisen scored
the first two goals of the game, including the eventual game-winner. For
his efforts, Mattheisen was named the Tournament's MVP. Also Nominated:

Wesleyan; Chris Kay, Ferrum.
Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Ashton
Herbert, Meredith - The Richmond, Virginia freshman
midfielder scored her first career goal in an 8-2 victory over Marymount
last week. Herbert also tallied an assist in the win. Herbert did not
appear in the Avenging Angels' only other contest of the week, a 4-0 win
over Bridgewater. Also Nominated: Liza Slater, Averett; Danielle
Minichello, Methodist; Shana Sumers, Shenandoah.
Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Mackenzie Tingle, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman
setter
from Clearbrook, Virginia helped the Bishops to a 1-1 record last
week by posted 69 assists, 15 digs, 12 kills, ten service aces and three
blocks. In a 3-2 loss to Virginia Wesleyan, Tingle tallied a
double-double of a team-high 27 assists and 12 digs. Tingle also added
eight kills, a co-match high four service aces and two blocks in the
loss. In a 3-2 victory over Mary Washington, Tingle contributed 42
assists, a team-high six service aces, four kills, three digs and one
block. Also Nominated: Jalesty Washington, Methodist; Kelsey Hargrove,
Greensboro; Brittany Moore, Averett; MaryBeth Finegan, Meredith.
Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Kyle
Gutierrez, Shenandoah - The freshman from Woodbridge,
Virginia has competed in two events to open the season. In his first
action, Gutierrez led the Hornets to a fourth-place finish at the
Delaware Valley Invitational. Gutierrez completed the 8K course in a
time of 28:18 which was good for an 8th place finish. In his second meet
of the season, Gutierrez helped the Hornets to a first-place finish at
the Shenandoah Invitational. Gutierrez finished second in a time of
28:59 on the 8K course. Also Nominated: Josh Bowling, Christopher
Newport.
Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Jade
Zaharoff, Christopher Newport - The freshman from
Vienna, Virginia helped the Captains finish sixth out of nine teams
at the Marlin Invitational. Zaharoff placed eighth out of 88 runners with
a time of 24:15 on the 6K course. Also
Nominated: Amy Smith, Shenandoah; Joyce McLeod, Meredith.
